FAQ

What does GCCAN want to do?

GCCAN aims to empower consumers to make the best decisions possible when starting or stopping gender care services. The Gender Care Consumer’s Bill of Rights details several areas where consumers have been let down by the current system of care. GCCAN seeks to advocate for anyone who has medically transitioned so we can get the best care possible.

How did GCCAN come to be?

GCCAN was created by a group of people who have transitioned and received inadequate care in some way. All of us are concerned about the state of gender care and believe consumers deserve better. For more information on our backstory and board members, read our Who We Are statement.

What is GCCAN’s political affiliation?

GCCAN is a politically neutral organization. As our dedication is to consumer rights, we do not collaborate with or accept money from groups or individuals that would pose a conflict of interest. This includes, but is not limited to, anti-LGBT organizations or activists, clinics or providers that offer gender care services, lobbying organizations, and pharmaceutical companies.

How are you funded?

Right now, GCCAN is a grassroots organization that is dependent on individual donations and fundraising. As the organization grows, we may apply for local or national grants. GCCAN is a registered 501(c)(3) and donations are tax-deductable.

Does GCCAN support transgender rights?

GCCAN’s focus is consumer rights. We are concerned with the wellbeing of all individuals who go through gender care. GCCAN has no official stance on legislation not related to health care and consumer advocacy in health care.

Does GCCAN support gatekeeping?

GCCAN is a consumer-focused organization. We believe in providing individuals with the information necessary to make the best possible choices regarding their health care. The organization seeks to empower individuals in making better decisions about their care and advocating for their individual needs, in whatever way this looks for them.

What is your stance on gender care for transitioning youth?

GCCAN does not support current pediatric gender transition practices and would like to see more studies, more caution in treatment, especially with permanent interventions, and better, holistic therapies that allow patients to explore all causes of their gender dysphoria before transitioning. We have major concerns about youth gender transition, especially as it is practiced today. There is very little research on the long-term effects of current treatment styles.

The ethical issues and gaps in care that GCCAN sees with all gender care are even more urgent with underage patients, who in many cases don’t have the cognitive development to grasp the implications of their medical choices in the same way that adults might.

Should I transition/detransition?

GCCAN believes that the best outcome depends on the individual. As an organization, our goal is to provide people with the information and resources necessary to make the best possible choices for their body. We’re not your doctor or therapist, nor do we know your unique situation.

We can’t personally tell you what’s best for you. The person that knows you best is you. We encourage thinking critically, gathering information, and exploring options that best suit you.

I’m suicidal, what should I do?

GCCAN encourages you to reach out to your local supports (such as friends, family, or peer groups), especially those that you trust. While there are lifelines and suicide hotlines available, GCCAN doesn’t have an official recommendation on those at this time. If you feel like you need to speak to someone through a lifeline or hotline, we recommend researching the ones in your area and determining which you are comfortable with calling.

I’m a concerned parent/ally of a transitioning person. Can I get support through GCCAN?

Unfortunately, GCCAN does not have the resources to provide individualized support to parents and allies. There are other organizations that are more focused on parents that may be more suited to your needs. You are also welcome to look through the publicly-accessible website and share any resources you find with your friends and loved ones.

How can I help?

We’re looking for experienced board members who are or have been consumers of gender care. Advocacy skills in law, medicine, and fundraising/grant-writing are especially needed. We are open for donations.

Additionally, GCCAN benefits from your grassroots support in getting the word out online and in-person.
